gcc bugid 85440 re ppc64 and libquadmath

I may be making noises in the mail list(s) but I really am trying to
figure out the mess. If older powerpc type hardware just does not
work then such is life and I will go fetch an IBM Power server from
somewhere and say goodbye to the old ppc970 platform.  However it
would be nice to at least look at the issue before kicking it aside
as a waste of time.

I'll have an old sparc system up in a rack for debian shortly. I won't
hold my breath to see libquadmath work there but I can tell you the
old old sources actually come from Sun Solaris and the OpenSolaris
sources and very very old stuff from SunPro.  Should be portable.
