Also see if creating an xorg.conf file and setting Accel to False will get it working.

 However, if i enabled the radeonfb, then it was a permanent
 freeze, even with nomodeset.

 the Radeon framebuffer and enabling 24-bit colors with a
 xorg.conf file.  It doesn't specifically mention the
 X800, but your symptoms sound similar to those suffered by
 certain iBooks and eMacs noted in the FAQ.
