I also discovered some weeks ago that all the problems with GNUstep in xlib backend (color shifts, etc) are related to the fact that in 16bit mode the driver advertises a TrueColor visual byut totally fails to make a proper conversion.
Using the cairocauses indeed a Crash like with emacs or iceweasel... Riccardo
