Hi,

my X crashes when certain programs are run, it started happening some
weeks ago after I updated.

It's a mach64 driver bug, fixed upstream by
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-mach64/commit/?id=2c83b465b336a012f2d2716940bf483358388000
Nice that it got fixed upstream! Any chance this is getting soon into
unstable? Or is there already a .deb I might force install to get the
machine back to usability?
You'd have to ask the package maintainers.
who are they? do they reasd this list?

I still have my iBook which is little more than a brick, since I cannot launch any decent X11 program.

I also discovered some weeks ago that all the problems with GNUstep in xlib backend (color shifts, etc) are related to the fact that in 16bit mode the driver advertises a TrueColor visual byut totally fails to make a proper conversion.
Using the cairocauses indeed a Crash like with emacs or iceweasel...
