Thanks for your suggestions.
I do not see an interface i can use / have cables for at the memory access panel on the back of my G3.
Gw i have not searched the list (doh!) but i did try to change my xorg.conf settings as i mention in an earlier message.
But this comment about yaboot confused me a bit. Do i have to have matching settings between yaboot and X (how come?)

Did you look at your xorg config, as Marcin mentioned before?
The graphic settings, via yaboot (or your bootloader), and also xorg.conf have
to be configured properly for the default display(s)
...not sure if either/both apply to your case, but it sounds awefully
familiar.
There has been a lot of discussion over the last year, on this list, about how
to configure these settings; it should be really helpful then to search /
browse about "black screen" and xorg config issues,
on the website from this mailing list
