Thanks. Actually, it looks like the X server initializes GLX fine.

Where are your /usr/lib/powerpc-linux-gnu/dri/tls/*_dri.so files from?
The Debian libgl1-mesa-dri package doesn't ship those but
only /usr/lib/powerpc-linux-gnu/dri/*_dri.so .
