ATI Radeon 9800 Pro blacks out, unrecoverable

List,

I am new to Debian and have installed Debian 6 net install on my Apple Gigabit G4 PPC. I have a serious problem with the video. I am using the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256M Mac Edition AGP card which has the R300 processor (brand new card). The video looks pretty good once I learned I must use the non-free repository for the video drivers. However I have this problem of the video spontaneously blanking out and will not return. When the video blanks out the screen is totally black and the monitor informs me that it is not connected. I have looked into the logs but I find nothing of value. I have tried connecting use the Digital output, the VGA output, and both connected together. The results are the same. This card works wonderfully when using OS X 5.5 on the same computer and has never presented any problems.

I am hoping this is an issue with a solution that is known to the list. Or some trouble shooting process can lead to a solution
