Fundamentally the problem with iBooks and recent Xorg versions is that
the current Xorg relies on auto-detecting monitor capabilities, and the
iBook hardware doesn't return that info properly. A general (if
annoying) fix is to keep an oldish live-CD that is known to work, boot
that and copy the xorg.conf to a pendrive, then use that xorg.conf. [I
used the Ubuntu 6.06 install CD, but Knoppix of comparable vintage
should also be OK].
