This is quite strange and sounds either like a bug or a hardware
problem. While the installer is running you can switch to another
console with a shell by pressing ALT-F2, there are also logs available
on consoles 3 and 4.

In the shell please check if the file /dev/hda exists. With the "dmesg"
command you can see the latest kernel messages and check if the kernel
detects your disks. Can you please send the output of the following
commands in the shell:

ls -l /dev/hda* /dev/sda*
dmesg | grep -i ide
dmesg | grep -i hda
dmesg | grep -i sda
