Yes, otherwise, you can't write to the filesystem (unless you force it,
which should not be a good idea).

I am the maintainer of hfsprogs and the fsck.hfs that is included there
is the same one that is included in MacOS X 10.4.9 (if I recall
correctly).
If you encounter some problems with the package (which I hope that
transitions soon to testing), please let me know.
