kernel building: what am i doing wrong?

hy,

i am trying to build a 2.6.16* kernel for my ppc-powerbook and look for some
kind of "default" kernel-config, from where i could start.

these are the ones i tried without success:
- pmac_defconfig from vanilla 2.6.16.11 (arch/ppc/configs) of kernel.org
- the one that comes with linux-pb-stable-2.6.15.6.tar.bz2 from
ppckernel.org
- the one that comes with the default debian 3.1 (iirc 2.6.8-powerpc)

"without success" means, i either get some kind of kernel panics ("call
trace" with a "prompt" where i can enter something) or the kernel cannot be
build at all and fails to compile.

so i wonder if i am doing something wrong at building one. here are the
steps i perform:

1. get a kernel from kernel.org
2. unpack it to /usr/src
3. delete the symlink /usr/src/linux an relink it on the new kernel
4. copy the config (p.ex. the one from above) to /usr/src/linux/.config
5. make oldconfig
6. make && make modules_install
7. cp /usr/src/linux/.config /boot/config-new
8. cp /usr/src/linux/System.map /boot/System.map-new
9. cp /usr/src/linux/vmlinux /boot/vmlinux-new
10. mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-new <kernelversion>
11. update the /etc/yaboot.conf
12. run ybin
13. reboot

are there any mistakes in this list? should these configs mentioned above
compile me a working kernel for my powerbook (12" g4 1ghz from 12-2003)?

thanks
michael
