Thanks! Next problem now: I added 

deb http://www.backports.org/debian/ sarge-backports main
to /etc/apt/sources.list

I added

Package: *
Pin: release a=sarge-backports
Pin-Priority: 200

Package: xorg-x11
Pin: release a=sarge-backports
Pin-Priority: 999

to /etc/apt/preferences

then I ran apt-get update, and by apt-cache search xorg-x11 I see
nothing! What do I miss?
