I'm not sure I understand all the technical stuff here, but could a
missing userspace library really cause an I/O error ?
Also, I have installed libdvdcss (this is one of the first thing I tried
when I saw I couldn't read DVDs), though I can't be sure it works :-)

I should be able to get the installation DVD-roms of MacOS X tonight so
I could test non-video DVDs under linux, and the DVD drive under OS X.
