I did not try this, but the nvsetenv utility from the powerpc-utils
package knows about boot-args:

    root@quiche [~] nvsetenv
    [...]
    boot-args=
    aapl,tdm-units=
    boot-device=/pci@f4000000/ata-6@d/disk@0:2,\\:tbxi

Maybe it is enough to just set the value via nvsetenv to "-v"?
