In fact, with 2.6.8 when I press the IO button it goes to sleep quite ok
(quite because when it comes back to life, it shows some columns of horizontal
lines of about 1cm wide... think of CD piles repeated randomly along the
screen). However, when I close the lid it is pretty bad, since the screen does
not go off.
