Well, same problem with nmixer (from the mp3blaster package).
Does the problem come from the kernel?

Also, I recommend not to install setmixer on the PowerBook G4
(in particular not with a headset!), as the setup just after
the installation makes a very loud continuous sound here. I've
reported the bug:

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=244467

If you want to try, have another mixer loaded to be ready to stop
the sound.
