I thought I should write back to the list and confirm what others have
already said: this problem is fixed in 2.6.4, and suspend/resume actually
works even better than in 2.4.20-ben10.

Useful resources for the big switch to 2.6:

http://malik.homelinux.org/ibook/ibook-2.6.html explains what packages to
install to get 2.6 working on a Debian powerpc, and some config issues.
One gotcha I found is that in the provided config file,
http://malik.homelinux.org/ibook/config-2.6.3-rc3-ben1 ,
the item CONFIG_MAC_SERIAL must be commented out in order for the compile
to succeed.

Also, contrary to what some people have said, I didn't find it necessary
to switch to ALSA -- there is still an OSS dma_sound module that seems to
work on the iBook2.

Thanks to all who wrote me to help.
