*might* be a bug in the control.c file in the alsa sources. Not being
sure..

Tentatively:
I'd check the sound status with the output (if any) of these 4 commands:
cat /proc/asound/version
lsmod
depmod -a
modprobe --verbose --debug snd-card-0
(before the last command:
grep -irs snd-card /etc/
to make sure the system knows about snd-card-<whatever>)
