In regards to the backlight - grep the mailinglist archives (someone posted an answer to that yesterday or so).
Let me know if you have any issues with the configs. (also tell me if everything works alright).
If you setup the key mapping, set it to french and set your locale to french (dpkg-reconfigure locales).
