testing install issues pismo 400 fw

Hi all

Today i christened a new 40gig drive in this pismo 400 (firewire) with a
fresh installation using the new debian installer disk.

The install was trouble free. No problems other than having a dying LG
DVDROM (know apple hardware fault).

The post-install has a number of outstanding issues.

X windows is very unstable - initially i was getting a small block about
70 pixels square in the middle of the screen that was complately out of
sync with the rest of the picture. It would not go away. Disabling Glx
seemed to fix that but then i was greeted with an X display that seemed
to have larger slabs that were slow to refresh and eventually X would
crash.

I tried 4 different kernels, the fault remained. After some tinkering
with XF86Config i have managed to stop X from crashing but the refresh
sux. This is a load of crud because the old HD (and testing build) had
no such problems. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?
Interesting snippets from dmesg include:

Also my firewire port appears to be showing up as an ethernet device
(eth1)
ieee1394: Host added: ID:BUS[0-00:1023] GUID[003065fffeb56628]

Also Gnome reports that the permissions for /dev/pmu are wrong (they are
currently set for root/root). What should they be?

cheers
