I don't know much about AppleTalk, but being a SMB client is simple:
there's kernel support for smbfs. That is, you can just mount SMB
servers' shares. However, that only works over TCP/IP. No NetBIOS
support, and probably no IPX/IPX support (for smb, not generically),
too.
