Just a shot in the dark :-)

I have this problem whenever I try to boot 2.4 directly into Linux--I 
haven't tried with 2.6 just yet.   I work around it by first booting 
MacOS, and then use the BootX app to lauch Linux.   It's annoying, but 
linux is stable enough that I only have to do it every 200 days or so 
when the power goes out.
