I just recompiled with CONFIG_FB_OF enabled and booted with
video=ofonly and this works fine. So the problem really is the atyfb.

This is the atyfb relevant part of my kernel .config:

CONFIG_FB_ATY=y
CONFIG_FB_ATY_CT=y
CONFIG_FB_ATY_GENERIC_LCD=y
# CONFIG_FB_ATY_XL_INIT is not set
# CONFIG_FB_ATY_GX is not set

It worked fine until the latest framebuffer merges (of course without
CONFIG_FB_ATY_GENERIC_LCD, which did not exist before the merges).
