I've had *exactly* this same problem. I've tied the following
combinations:

 wep enabled | ap.3com | ap.apple |
-------------+---------+----------+
ibm/linux | ok | NOT OK |
-------------+---------+----------+
ibook/linux | ok | NOT OK |
-------------+---------+----------+
ibm/win2k | ok | ok |
-------------+---------+----------+
ibook/macosx | ok | ok |
-------------+---------+----------+

where:

ibm : is an ibm thinkpad (with linux and win2k) with a 3com
           atmelwlan driven pcmcia card
ap.3com : is a 3com access point
ap.apple : is the airport extreme base station

Without wep, everything works fine.

I did these combination tests a couple of months ago (with 2.4).

So I concluded is some sort of problem between linux (both my thinkpad
and ibook) and _my_ apple basestation.

Past weekend I retried 2.6.1-ben1 against my apple basestation with web
enabled, did not work.
