further to XKB issues
well, now the server doesn't even start; snippet from my XFree log:
(==) ADB 3-Button MouseMan Mouse: Buttons: 3
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "ADB 3-Button MouseMan Mouse" (type: MOUSE)
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
(II) Server_Terminate keybinding not found
(II) ADB 3-Button MouseMan Mouse: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
the only difference was my commenting out calling xmodmap in my
~/.xsession to load an an modmap file. i suspect the above was going on,
but the terminal output was just giving the "Couldn't ..." line, plus a
"Segmentation fault".

per grsec's logging of the signal. it's going to dump core, but doesn't.
not that unusual; what *is* unusual is the xkbcomp's SEGV sig.
(/me goes to test this wacky theory...)
nope. no go. it isn't that. the behaviour is like this.
1. i type startx and hit return, it lanuches;
2. the monitor does its dance of switching off and back on, seemingly going
to load up the xserver's output;
3. it aborts abruptly, no other messages than that SEGV;
4. i get dropped into console again.
the only outright error i get is:
(EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPAN_DISPLAY: Invalid argument
everything else is either a WW or the usual normal ** -- II == stuff.
i've tried reinstalling xlibs-data and xserver-xfree86. no go. same for
xserver-common.
outta ideas, and too tired to care
eric
