Can't access modem with kppp

I installed Woody on a summer 2000 imac about two months ago. Since then I have been trying to get kppp to work. Pon and ppp work fine. I am now running a mixed testing/unstable system with kde3. (Had the same trouble with kde2) dAs far aas I can tell kapp is configured the same as ppp. When I run kppp I get "looking for modem", "modem open" and "modem does not respond" and then just ssits there until I cancel it. I have tried using a script to execute chat but haqv about
the same result. It returns "ATZ" and then times out after about a minute.
When I use pon the date and time on /dev/ttyS0 are updated but this does not happen with kppp.
/etc/ppp/options has entry "noauth".
I would appreciate any suggestions.
