That's ok. In my case I have only a console, so, is the parameters
"console=ttyS0,9600" aren't set it doesn't work as expected. If
connect a serial console (or null modem between two serial ports
and kermit makes it) you can see all messages. Also, you should
be able to see "Linux-PPC ... Have fun!" in the LCD when all is ok.

No, you can install a dhcp server or a bootp server in any machine
connected in the same segment of network that your RS6000. May be
the main problems with laptops is most of them (the last ones)
doesn't provide serial port).
