You can sure remove a lot of those processes. For instance, do
you need NFS and/or NIS? If you don't, I think that you can
remove portmaper. Do you really need gpm? And xfs? And many
getty's? Do you need to use gnome-terminal? I always use rxvt
instead.
I guess that you can lower the memory requirements of your
system... There seems to be room for that.

The problem is simply that your system is swapping too much.
You may use a program like vmstat to have a better idea of
what is happening with your computer.
