Sorry, I responded without realizing others had already covered it.

According to the man page, the target must be a directory
for multiple file copies. That sounds like maybe it has
to be a directory at a time, using 

hpcopy -m /sourcedir/* /targetdir

I think the error messages are probably from leaving out the 
required [-m|-b|-t|-r|-a].
