mencode and transcode work like a charm, dvd::rip works 
and makes the job very easy (though you have to build the
latter two from source, but it's painless)

mplayer get it here :

xine and ogle should be in apt anyway, you'll need to run
/usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples/install-css.sh
