kernel problem with 12inch powerbook and 2.4.21-ben2

Hello
This is my first post here but I have been scanning the archives and not
found a solution to my issue.

I just purchased my first mac, a 12 inch powerbook. Being a long time
Debian user I would like to dual boot OS X and Debian Sid on this
machine.

I was able to partition my HD and reinstall OS x, and install Debian
using the intructions found here
https://www.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/~schmidtm/apple/powerbook.en.php
http://people.debian.org/~branden/ibook/

The install went fine, including the mid install reboot. After
apt-get'ing many packages I downloaded the 2.4.21 kernel and rsynced to
benh2. compiled and installed. Now when I reboot into open firmware...

boot hd:9,yaboot #to get to yaboot
boot: hd:11,/vmlinux root=/dev/hdc11 ro #to boot my new 2.4.21-benh2
kernel

I get kernel panic with the following message

VFS: Cannot open root device "hdc11" or 16:0b
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 16:0b

Now if I reboot and use the following command in yaboot

boot: hd:11,/vmlinux #without the root=

the machine boots but gives me the fsck error

fsck.ext2: No such device while trying to open /dev/hdc11
/dev/hdc11:
THe superblock could not ---snip--
Give root password for maintenance

When I give my root password and do a df -hT
I can see the /dev/hdc11 ext2 partition mounted at /

My partitions looks like this
/dev/hdc1-8 are all macosx partions
/dev/hdc9 is the debian boot partition
/dev/hdc10 is my swap
/dev/hdc11 is my Linux root / partition
mac osx reports my partitions as
/dev/disk0s12 as root / #plus all those other devfs, fdesc, and stuff

So can I get any help for a brand new linux powerpc user.
I hope I provided enough info.
