I haven't given up.
The new benh-kernel at 
http://ppckernel.org/benh-devel/linux-benh-devel-2.4.21-ben2.tar.gz makes 
quite a difference.
"Make system bootable" works, but again, I ran into errors.
"boot hd:2,yaboot" works now, but booting stops at "VFS: cannot open root 
device "hda3"

That's quite remarkable. Now, my harddisk seems to be at hda (not at hdc 
anymore). It's the same harddisk on the same connection with still the same 
problems (although one less).

The automatically generated /etc/yaboot.conf is:
"boot=/dev/hda2
device=hd:
partition=3
root=/dev/hda3
timeout=30
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot

image=/vmlinux
    label=Linux
    read-only"
