You can even remap those "audio-keys". Within your favourite
window-manager you can define an aumix command to those key
bindings. ;-)

keycode 158 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
keycode 165 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
keycode 166 = XF86AudioMute

This is on a (crappy) german keyboard btw. So the keycodes might
differ.

I personally prefer Apple+Backspace. Only motif-apps are confused
by this key-combination. Any other application will work
correctly.
