I have a PYRO 1394 Three-Port PCI Host Card which works fine with
2.4.19. In order to use the webcam that was purchased with the card, I
had to add the following module options:

alias /dev/raw1394 raw1394
options ohci1394 attempt_root=1

Unfortunately, application support is not great for firewire webcams
when I played with it a while back. Might be a problem with your iPod
as well?
