I just saw exactly this behavior due to pbbuttonsd not running. It
attempted to start but failed because /dev/cdrom symlink did not exist.
Attempting to start pbbuttonsd from the command line
# pbbuttonsd
revealed it's problem with no /dev/cdrom symlink.
