I've tried ifdown, certainly.
One thing that works, temporarily, is...
> ifdown eth0
... connect ethernet cable ...
> ifup eth0
... no more messages! ...
> ifdown eth0
... messages start again :(
I'll give a look at ethtool next time it happens, though.
