I've never installed quik (I used BootX), but I think the double chime you hear
may be the parameter ram getting reinitialized.
I know that if you hold Command-Option-P-R the parameter ram gets reset and then
it reboots, giving you another chime.
If quik screwed with the parameter ram in some way, maybe the Mac OS is trying
to restore it to a default state. That would wipe out your control setting.
I'm just speculating, I don't really know. Anyway, do each of the two chimes
you hear sound like the normal boot chime?
