installing debian on ibm 44p 270

hi! i'm trying to install debian on a ibm 44p 270 machine. it is a power3 64bit machine (any other details needed?). i saw that suse support it, but they says to use kernel 2.4
as i understood the boot disks of woody are based on 2.2 kernel, and i get a "catch default" error from the openfirmware.
does anyone know if it is available a boot disk with 2.4.x kernel?
i'm trying to upgrade the openfirmware, cos i read on a netbsd faq that error could be caused by an old firmware. i'm trying to understand how to cross compile a kernel from a i386 machine for a ppc64, could be good?

any ideas?

thanks in advance
