I've tried it on a powerpc now (thanks, Adam Conrad) and couldn't
reproduce the problem there either. In fact, on that machine I don't see
any _newselect() calls at all.

What does 'ls -l /usr/lib/man-db/man' say, and what version of libdb2 do
you have installed?
