adsl connecting, but not doing anything

well, i have been able to "connect", according to the DSL software i
installed, but i don't seem to be getting anything down to my side of the
connection. the modem lights flash a little, but when i try to e.g. FTP or
download some packages, nothing happens. it just sits there at 0%, doing
nothing. as far as i can tell, everything's working - and the dsl works fine
on the mac side. the dsl package i got was very specifically written for my
ISP's particular quirks, and was very easy to install (once i got the proper
C compiler...).
as far as i can tell, i haven't missed anything. i've configured for my
localhost, the appletalk connection, everything. i don't know if this is any
use, but i'm posting some of the relevant (AFAIK) boot messages (i'll post
the relevant log if need be):

now, i dunno if i have to remove, activate, or whatever thing that's
blocking or should activated. when i do connect, i get this from adsl-status
(doing it from memory):
ppp0:
UP NOARP POINTTOPOINT HW: xx:xx:xx:xx:...
IP: (one for my assigned IP, and another for the ISP's IP)
(various RTX and other packet stuff here)
with ifconfig, i get the additional UP connection of the eth0, as well as
the ppp0. i i've checked all the man pages, docs, and other stuff, and there
doesn't seem to be a problem, but like i said, nothing happens. (i did find
a firewall).
the physical setup is two macs hooked up to a hub, with the modem on the
same hub, and the 2 macs communicating over appletalk (installed netatalk on
the debian side). when i'm on the debian side, the quadra sees the appletalk
IP side in the chooser, and prefers to connect over AT-IP, and not the local
connection, but does see the appletalk. do i need to have 2 ethernet cards
on the powermac, so it can actually connect to the net, or would it work
like on the mac OS side?
