I don't know anything about getting linux on an RS/6000, but I did once
play with an RS/6000 C10 (601 ppc) which just such a digital display.
On IBM's rs6000 support site, you should have no trouble downloading
manuals in pdf form about your model.  One of the manual suplements
describes in detail all the diagnostic codes on the 3 digit display.
It can tell you a wide range of things such as: no video device, ram not
working, scanning mca slot 1 or 2 etc, and whether the bus is okay, also
whether the drives are okay.

Of course I doubt knowing what the codes mean is going to help you
installing debian on the machine.  At least you have a 604... I heard it
generally easier with the machines which shipped with those (not on
virtue of the processor alone).
