	Indeed, I've built Linux 2.4.17-ben0 successfully and the
	dmasound_pmac works fine for me.

	In fact, this old machine I have here in front of me is
	reasonably well configured to the point of being able to
	substitute my main computer in case of a crash or other
	disaster. :-)

	BTW, as a suggestion to the original poster, I'd suggest:

	cd /path/to/kernel/source
	mv .config ..
	make mrproper
	mv ../.config .
	make oldconfig
	(see if everything went well)
	make dep zImage modules
	(login as root)
	make modules_install
