Hi.. I finally got things working.. I found that my kde startup script was redirecting tmp and socket to /dev/null and when I checked the permissions, /dev/null was not a character device.. so I deleted it and recreated /dev/null and KDE's up and running again! Thanks everyone for your help.. nirmal
