if you are using gnome, there is a procedure that kills apps that take too long to start up. so if oo takes too long it may get killed. you can fix this by editing the soffice script ~/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/soffice . all you have to do is put this line at the top of the script:
unset SESSION_MANAGER
