yes, for X, edit the file ~/.xmodmap, there I have an entry
keycode 22 = Backspace Delete Delete
keycode 31 = i I Insert
keycode 115 = Mode_switch
clear mod1
clear mod3
add mod1 = Alt_L
add mod3 = Mode_switch

in that way, the "apple" key has the same function than the "AltGr" key.
So, alt+Backspace or apple+Backspace is like delete. But if you use an
us keyboard, you probably won't need the "AltGr" key, so I think the
first line would be enough. To start xmodmap, type
xmodmap ~/.xmodmap
once X is started.
If you want to see the keycodes of your keyboard, lauch xev under X.

I only know i386.deb's, but compiled by hand, it works fine on my iBook
