The interface has to be up as well.

$ sudo ethtool eth0 | grep -i link
	Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 
	Advertised link modes:  1000baseT/Full 
	Link detected: yes

That's on my iBook's GMAC card.
