debian version is not the same as kernel version. You are running debian
potato, which is version 2.2. the kernel you are running is given by

uname -a

Yes, it does seem to but it hasn't been tested as much. The biggest 
difference I noticed on oldWorlds using the 2.4 kernel, was that the 
video=ofonly boot argument might need to be changed (removed).  
Since you're apparently already running 2.4, might as well leave it
and just dist-upgrade using apt-get rather than doing a new install.
