i have debian running happily on my lombard, using the 'unstable' (or sid?) 
which i upgraded to after getting base install working.

i used the disks from here -> http://debian-imac.sourceforge.net/

and there are some usefull instructions here -> 
http://www.debian.org/releases/woody/installmanual
 (in several langauges, if english isnt your first language)
