kernel compile advice for ext3, freeswan on pismo

I'd be grateful for any advice on which kernel version to choose to
support the following:

	ext3
	freeswan
	ipchains
	and the usual mac hardware support stuff for a pismo.

Also, I'd be grateful to know what I should download to support firewire
disks (if there is indeed support for this).
