I also have a new iBook (12.1", but the system-board seems to be the
same), there seems to be a kernel bug making the hard drive inaccessable
when a cd is in the drive while booting up. Copy the installer files
to a hfs partition on your harddisk and use openFirmware to boot into
the installer (you'll find documentation on the web about installing
without physical media which succeed). You also want a to get a newer
kernel to make sound and airport work.
