I've added the CC.

Okay, first you need to make sure you've made the right
boot floppy. I think the 8500 still used SCSI CD-ROMs and
the kernel needs that compiled in.

Can you mount the CD under MacOS? or on some other computer
to make sure it works?

Can you enable the network so that you can just get the
base system straight from a debian mirror?
